The Former Japanese Navy Underground Headquarters

This was my favorite trip out of everything we did. These tunnels were dug using only pick axes during World War II and could sustain 4,000 soldiers. The tunnels still exist in their original condition and have opened to the public.
Map of underground tunnels.

Paper cranes hand at the entrance to the tunnels which represent the thousands of Okinawans and Japanese that died here.

Visitors can still see the knicks in the walls where pick axes and hoes were used.

This is the room were Admiral Minoru Ota along with many of his men and officers died. They pulled hand grenades on themselves in this very room. You can see where scrapnel from the grenades hit the walls.

The tool of choice.

The visit was interesting but depressing. There were so many graphic pictures in the museum of the devastation to the land and the people during the war. So afterwards, we enjoyed a pick-me-up of yummy ice cream.
